The College of Central Florida’s literary magazine, Imprints, recently hosted a student photography contest centered on the theme “New Beginnings,” allowing students to showcase their creativity through visual storytelling.
Selected entries will be featured in the 2026 issue of Imprints as well as a new rotating exhibit in the CF Library. The contest included three winners and two honorable mentions. Submissions were evaluated by Imprints student leadership for creativity, composition, technical execution and connection to the theme.
According to Imprints, the contest is part of a broader effort to expand creative opportunities for students beyond the magazine through exhibits and other campus projects. The library exhibit, expected to open in July, will feature student work on a rotating basis each academic year.
Capturing Connection and Emotion
First-place winner Cynthia Lainey Brown’s photograph, “New Beginnings of Love,” captures a candid moment between two people during a beach sunset. Rather than staging a posed shot, Brown said she focused on documenting an authentic interaction.

“This photo was inspired by a genuine moment between two people who love deeply for each other,” Brown said. “Instead of focusing on perfect poses, I wanted to capture the connection and emotion that naturally unfolded.”
Brown said the image represents a new chapter in life and relationships.
“The setting sun marks the end of one day while promising the start of another,” Brown said. “That shows a visual representation of new beginnings.”
Brown shared how learning her work had been selected was both exciting and meaningful.
“As a photographer, you put a piece of yourself into every photo you capture, so having my work recognized and selected was both rewarding and encouraging.”
A Simple Take on New Beginnings
Second-place winner Austin Gatlin-Johnson’s photograph, “First Camping Trip,“ offers a different interpretation of the theme, focusing on a family camping experience and time spent outdoors.

“What inspired me to take the photo was honestly the view. It was a beautiful day,” Gatlin-Johnson said.
“My photo connects to the theme ‘New Beginnings’ because it was a start to a new adventure that me and my family decided to take. We are taking the time to step away from electronics and spend more time outdoors exploring.”
Gatlin-Johnson said he was surprised when he learned his photograph had been selected as a winner.
“I feel proud that a picture I took is being used for display!”
