Glen Owen began his eight-day journey on Feb. 29 and, even with weather delays, he reached the Tropical Oasis restaurant in Miami on March 8 at around 3 p.m. His route consisted of 10 coordinated stops in Melbourne, Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, Jupiter, West Palm Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and the finish line, Miami!
The run/walk was part of Owen’s fundraising initiative to provide scholarships and bursaries for current students at Haile Selassie High School, his alma mater in Jamaica.
Although he struggled along the way, he had the support of his friends and family to keep him going.
Sandra Wright Gray, the former head girl of Haile Selassie High School, presented Owen – the former head boy – with a medal of gratitude for his contributions toward furthering the education of other students. The medal reads “300 Miles for Education” with the initials of Haile Selassie.
And Glen Owen isn’t done yet. He is still selling tickets to the Haile Selassie High School reunion at the Goldcoast Ballroom and Event Center in Coconut Creek to continue raising funds for his goal of $5,000 for the scholarship to help the current students. He is also accepting donations through his Zelle, $glenvinowen, or by calling 352-286-3371.
