Did you know that being aware of the way you learn will help you maximize your potential so that you can succeed in college? Did you know that the way you spend your time reveals what type of learner you are? Did you know that CF offers completely free tutoring to its students?
Mega Monday on Sept. 17, 2018 was hosted by The CF Student Resources department. It featured numerous speakers who are employed by Student Resources who are also tutors. They delved into different techniques you can use if you are a hands-on learner such as creating flash cards and writing good notes. They expounded on how to grow if you are an audible learner. Read your material to yourself out loud and record your lectures to listen to them while driving. If you are a visual learner, then you can use pictures and illustrations to help demonstrate a topic to you. It would also be helpful to color coordinate your notes. If you are an interactive learner, then you should try to participate in study groups.
The meeting started with Jamie White, the coordinator for Academic Support asking the attendees how they spent their free time. He asked if they played sports, watched movies, hung out with friends, did arts and crafts, listened to music podcasts, and much more. After this, White informed the participants that if they liked to play sports or do arts and crafts they were a hands-on learner. If they preferred to watch movies, then they were a visual learner, if they listen to music, then they were an audible learner and if they preferred to spend time with friends, they were an interactive learner.
The purpose of this Mega Monday was to educate the students about why they are not successful in their classes and to teach them how to be successful. CF offers a lot of free resources to help students better understand their classes and manage the areas they have difficulties in.
“I participated in today’s event because I thought it was a really great idea to help the students in being more successful and more organized,” said Sherry Licardo, one of the math tutors and a speaker at the event. “We also wanted them to be more aware of what their learning style is. A lot of students don’t know what their learning style is, so we are trying to enlighten them on how they can utilize that in order to help them be more successful in their studies.”
“I believe communication, and having a relationship between the faculty and the students is important”, Said Shanti Singh, one of the English tutors who is also a student here at CF. “Once I learned my own learning style, and once I began to utilize the free tutoring, I began to excel in my classes.”
Singh said that a key component of the event was at the end when students began to ask questions. She said it showed that they were being reflective, and it also enabled the staff to be able to reach out and help them.
Licardo said that the realization of your learning style will enable you to succeed. Once you know how you learn you can begin to study in a way that will work best for you and will yield the best results.
“I felt that the response was really good”, Licardo said. “Because it seemed everyone was active. You could tell that they were soaking up what we were trying to show them and also making them more aware.”
“A lot of students struggle and don’t really seek out help”, said Terrance Conway another speaker from the event who is also a current student. “So we really wanted to be able to reach the students that struggle and tend to fade away.”
One thing that was emphasized during the presentation was that just because you fail a test does not mean you will fail the entire class, and just because you did not do well early does not mean you can’t be successful.
“We wanted to illuminate the fact that college is easier than it seems,” said Conway. “We want to see more students take advantage of the things that we told them.”
