BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – Folk musicians, storytellers and fans of Florida’s cultural heritage gathered for the 2025 Will McLean Music Festival, a three-day event honoring the state’s folk music traditions. The festival, held at the Florida Sand Music Ranch from March 7-9, featured live performances, workshops and opportunities for attendees to participate in folk tradition.
The festival was founded in honor of Will McLean, widely regarded as the “Father of Florida Folk.” McLean’s music and storytelling helped shape the identity of Florida’s folk scene, capturing the essence of the state’s natural beauty and diverse cultures. McLean, a self-taught musician, was instrumental in developing a distinctive Florida folk style that combined elements of blues, bluegrass and country. He wrote songs inspired by the landscape, people and the stories of Florida and his work became a touchstone for future generations of folk artists.
Held annually since 1985, the Will McLean Music Festival aims to continue McLean’s legacy by supporting and promoting folk music, particularly the local artists who keep the tradition alive. This year’s festival offered a range of musical performances, including bluegrass, acoustic and traditional folk music all set against the scenic backdrop of the Florida Sand Music Ranch.
In addition to its mainstage acts, the festival places a strong focus on young musicians through its youth program, with an emphasis on fostering the next generation of folk musicians. The program featured a variety of activities designed to engage and develop young musicians. Aspiring artists had the opportunity to participate in various activities such as a battle of the bands and a songwriting collaboration in which participants created an original song, later performed on the festival’s main stage, the Magnolia stage.
Beyond the music, the festival offered a vibrant marketplace featuring vendors selling handmade clothing, jewelry, artwork and traditional and unique crafts. Food vendors served a variety of different cuisines for festivalgoers to enjoy.
Camping was a key part of the festival experience, with many attendees and musicians staying on-site for the weekend. Even after scheduled performances ended, musicians and festivalgoers gathered for informal jam sessions, keeping the music going late into the night.
A highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night contra dance, with featured live folk music and a workshop for newcomers. The dance brought together people of all ages to participate in the traditional group dance style, adding to the festival’s interactive and community-focused atmosphere.
The Will McLean Music Festival continues to serve as a major event for folk music enthusiasts, celebrating the past while supporting the future of Florida’s folk traditions.
The festival is held annually at the Florida Sand Music Ranch. Gate pricing is $35 for a Friday Pass, $45 for a Saturday pass, $25 for a Sunday pass and $90 for a weekend pass. Tickets for children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Camping fees are $40 per night for electric sites, $20 per night for primitive camping and there is a $15 dump fee. All prices are tax-inclusive, and festival tickets do not include camping.
