The CF Theatre’s production of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Tim Kelly, directed by Nonalee Davis and based on the story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is a theatrical rendition that whisked me away to the eerie confines of an English moorhouse in the 1890s. I found myself amid fog-shrouded moors, where a chilling mystery awaited, and the legendary hound’s shadow loomed large. “The Hound of the Baskervilles” seamlessly blended the suspense of a classic ‘whodunit’ murder mystery with delightful charm and witty humor.
The most remarkable performances came from Collin Williams, who starred as Sherlock Holmes, and Nadine Knight as Kathy Stapleton. Sherlock Holmes is a famous detective known for his extraordinary deductive skills and scientific approach to solving complex mysteries. His iconic attire, including the deerstalker cap and pipe, and his bromance-like partnership with his partner Dr. John Watson make him one of literature’s most enduring and recognizable characters. Collin Williams did a fantastic job portraying Sherlock Homes fitting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original story. Kathy Stapleton is the love interest of the Baskerville heir, Sir Henry, with a bit of a twist. Nadine Knight displays Kathy enigmatically, with a vibrant and cheerful demeanor, while simultaneously being eerily intense and almost neurotic. Her darkly manic, methodical approach to Kathy’s character is what stood out to me most throughout the play.
When I watch shows, movies, plays or anything of the sort, I am someone who pays close attention to detail. A captivating part of the play was whenever Holmes would address the audience or discuss “privately” with Dr. Watson; the other characters still maintained their soft presence in the background. Providing multiple perspectives in the same scene captivates me because I then feel my focus completely drawn into the play, making it an immersive experience.
Overall, CF Theatre’s adaptation of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” offered a riveting take on the timeless mystery. The standout portrayals by Collin Williams and Nadine Knight enriched the characters. The play skillfully merged tension and wit, providing an engaging experience. I look forward to attending more plays at the CF Theatre.
